Souvenirs from Munich

These Steins show a very colorful horse-drawn carriage loaded with wooden kegs festively decorated to enter the Oktoberfest just in front of the Munich City Hall. The logos of all Munich breweries who participate in the Oktoberfest each year are replicated along the top of the glass or stein. The glasses have a decorative gold rim and the Stein features a pewter lid. They are very reasonably priced and make a great gift for your next birthday.

Some answers that we like to share with you:

Nymphenburg Palace ---- The Wittelbach dynasty's
summer residenceoutside of Munich. Actually, King
Ludwigs' Birthday was Aug 24th around 11:30pm. The announcement of his birth was delayed so the he would have the same birthday of his grandfather.

Arlena

King Ludwig II of Bavaria was born in Nymphenburg Castle outside Munich in the early hours of August 25, 1845. He was the eldest son of King Maximillian II and Queen Marie, and was named after his grandfather, King Ludwig I.

Sincerely,

Kathy

The future King Ludwig II was born at the Nymphenburg Palace

Which was the Wittelsbach dynasty's summer residence just outside Munich.

Where in Bavaria are we? - Your Quiz

Please name the sight and the town it is in or near by - many readers share some of their travel experience with us, which we will publish to share with you

Your hint: We are on top of a mountain near Rottach-Egern and near the Tegernsee. The people in the picture are going to enjoy the longest sled ride in Germany - they have six and a half km to go.

Thank you all for all your right answers!

This wintry Palace is Schloss Nymphenburg - The former summer residence of the rulers of Bavaria is located in the west part of the city in the middle of one of Munich's most beautiful parks. Five generations of Wittelsbach rulers were involved in the construction of this Baroque castle. The building of Nymphenburg Castle began in the reign of the Elector Ferdinand Maria: overjoyed by the birth of his son and heir, Max Emanuel, he had the central section built for his wife in the style of an Italian villa (Agostino Barelli, 1664-74). In about 1700, Max Emanuel commissioned Enrico Zuccali and Antonio Viscardi to extend the castle by adding galleries and pavilions.  David Lucas

Here are some more correct answers with your stories:
The answer to your quiz is Nymphenburg Palace. We drove by the palace earlier in December. We have visited the buildings in the past--the Gallery of Beauties is not to be forgotten along with the Porcelain and Carriage Museums.  A few years back I visited the grounds with my son. While eating lunch outdoors, we met two women who were from Dallas--one lived in Berlin and the other was visiting Munich on business. The woman who was on the business trip, had a father in Dallas who had recently been operated on by Doctors that my son worked for.  Small world!
Regards,
Paul

This is Nymphenburg Palace located just outside of Munich. It is said that Ludwig II was actually born on August the 24th,but because it was his grandfather's (Ludwig I)  wish to have a grandchild born on his birthday. They delayed the announcement for 1 hour. I toured this palace when a group of our German Club members went for spring break. It was very beautiful.

Bavarian Bier Calendar

In Bavaria, the changing of the seasons is just as much determined by the rhythm of the brew as it is by the rhythm of the weather. As the snow begins to melt in the spring, the Bavarians start dreaming about Bier garden time. However, since it is still much too cold to enjoy a liter in the open air, they have the party indoors, and the brews for the occasion are the malty, strong, heart- and belly-warming Bockbier and Doppelbock. This annual two-week celebration always falls in the Lenten period and is called “Starkbierzeit,” which means Strong Bier Season.

To banish the last of the winter blues, the Bavarians stage another celebration in April, during which they commemorate the glories of Bavarian Bier itself. The opener is the Bavarian Bier Day, followed by a week-long party fittingly called Bavarian Bier Week.

During the summer, Bavarians hold no Bier celebrations  or just one, depending on your point of view. As soon as the days get longer, the trees blossom, and the temperature rises to the human comfort zone, Bavarians head for their beloved Bier gardens ... where they spend their spare time in joyous outdoor togetherness until September. There are no organized Bier fests during the summer, simply because there is no need for one. In May, the Bier of choice in the Bier gardens may be a blond Maibock, a brew that is as hefty as an amber Lenten Bockbier, but as golden as a Pils. As the days get warmer, the Biers get lighter. At summer’s peak, it’s time for the classic Bavarian straw-blond lager, the Helles, the quaffing Bier of summer time.

As soon as the chill of fall is in the air, tents go up and the next Bier fest is just around the corner ... Oktoberfest. It starts near the end of September and ends in early October. The annual Munich Oktoberfest has become the world’s biggest party, and perhaps also the most famous one.

Bavarians take Christmas seriously. In many towns and cities, the traditional Christmas markets start shortly before the first day of Advent and last until Christmas Eve, December 24. Perhaps the most famous Christmas markets are in the old town of Nürnberg and right in downtown Munich. For this festive season, most Bavarian breweries come out with a special, seasonal strong Bier. These Festbiers are often very opaque to almost black, perhaps reminiscent of a Schwarzbier in color, but as strong as a Bockbier or a Doppelbock. These are the sort of Biers you want to sip slowly, with contemplation, in one of the cozy Bier halls while watching the snowflakes tumble past the window pane. They are nourishing brews which go well with some of Munich's hearty culinary specialties, such as baked pig's knuckle enveloped in coarsely ground sweet'n'spicy Bavarian mustard, and served with a bread dumpling.
